WELCOME TO DOGCOACH
How to find the right DogCoach coat size for your dog
At DogCoach, we design dog coats with comfort, functionality, and, most importantly, freedom of movement in mind.
Your dog should be able to run, play, sniff, and move naturally while staying warm and dry, whatever the weather brings.
That’s why finding the right size is so important. A dog coat shouldn’t feel tight, shift around, or restrict your dog’s movement. It should fit comfortably while leaving plenty of room to move and the possibility of adding an extra layer on colder days.
Luckily, finding the right size is easy!
Take a minute to measure your dog before placing your order.
We’ll walk you through the three key measurements to help you find the perfect fit for your dog's new coat.
READY, SET, MEASURE!
Grab a soft measuring tape. Don't have one? A piece of string and a ruler will work just fine, too.
Have your dog stand naturally on a flat surface, with all four paws on the ground and their head in a relaxed, neutral position.
A few treats (and maybe an extra pair of hands) can help keep your dog still while you measure.
Tip: Measure your dog while they're standing comfortably. Let the measuring tape follow the shape of their body without pulling it tight or compressing their fur.
3 MEASUREMENTS TO FIND THE RIGHT FIT
A. Back length - how long is your dog?
Start at the base of the neck, below where the collar normally sits, and measure along the back to the base of the tail.
Back length is the most important measurement when choosing your DogCoach coat size.
Remember: Stop at the base of the tail. Don't include the tail itself.
B. Chest circumference - how broad is your dog?
Measure all the way around the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind the front legs.
The coat should fit securely without feeling tight, leaving enough room for your dog to move freely and comfortably.
C. Neck circumference - How big is your dog's neck?
Measure around the widest part of your dog's neck.
The neck opening should feel comfortable without pinching or restricting movement when your dog turns their head.
As a general rule, you should be able to fit two to three fingers comfortably between the coat and your dog's neck.
Remember to allow room for extra layers: If you're planning to use a midlayer or winter liner with your dog's coat, make sure there's enough room for it. You can also measure your dog while they're wearing the additional layer.
| Measurements in cm / Dog jacket size | 25 | 30 | 35 | 40 | 45 | 50 | 55 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Back length, from neck to base of tail | 25 | 30 | 35 | 40 | 45 | 50 | 55 |
| Maximum neck circumference | 37 | 39 | 42 | 45 | 48 | 51 | 54 |
| Minimum chest circumference | 28 | 32 | 36 | 40 | 44 | 48 | 52 |
| Maximum chest circumference | 53 | 59 | 65 | 71 | 77 | 83 | 89 |
WHICH SIZE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Once you have all three measurements, you're ready to find the best fit.
Head to the size chart on the product page and compare your dog's measurements.
Our three best sizing tips:
- Start with back length. This is your most important starting point when choosing a size.
- Check the chest and neck measurements. There should be enough room for comfortable movement and additional layers without the coat becoming too loose.
- Between two sizes? Feel free to reach out! We'll be happy to help you find the best option for your dog.
REMEMBER: NO TWO DOGS ARE EXACTLY ALIKE
Not all Jack Russells are built the same. And two Labradors won't necessarily have the same measurements, either!
Some dogs have long backs and short legs. Others have broad chests, thick necks, or narrow shoulders. And of course, there's also the question of how much fur they have.
That's why it's important to consider your dog's individual body shape and coat type when choosing a size.
- Slim dogs: Make sure the coat isn't too loose or likely to shift around. A smaller size may work better if your dog's measurements allow for it.
- Broad or muscular dogs: Look for plenty of room around the chest, shoulders, and neck. In some cases, sizing up may provide a better fit.
- Dogs with thick or fluffy coats: Long or dense fur may require a little extra room.
Our best advice: Always measure your dog instead of choosing a size based on breed or weight alone.
The right fit isn't just about length. It's also about giving your dog the freedom to move their shoulders and front legs naturally.
Common measuring mistakes to avoid
- Your dog isn't standing naturally: Make sure your dog is standing comfortably and evenly on all four paws.
- Measuring too far along the back: Stop at the base of the tail to avoid choosing a coat that's too long.
- Pulling the measuring tape too tight: Keep it close to the body without unnecessarily compressing the fur.
- Forgetting about extra layers: If you plan to use a midlayer or winter liner, make sure the coat has enough room for it.
