Dear Marvin.
It seems so short a time since I sat there on the grass on a lovely spring day surrounded by playful and curious puppies. I had to choose, and it was hard. But you made it easy. You chose me. I immediately felt a deep connection with the little brown puppy that had crawled into my lap and gone to sleep. I no longer had any doubts – that was the puppy I wanted – you.

Time has flown by, and now you are 6 years old. In fact, you are heading towards the “3rd age”, just like me. We are both in mid-life and a little rounder in the stomach. As the vet said at your annual health check, “You are healthy and strong Marvin, but there is room to cover up to two on your back.” My doctor was a little more direct, so we have gone on a diet, you and I. I clearly sense that you do not completely agree with that decision, but I want you to be here for many years by my side, and I know yours, so the amount of food and activity level have been adjusted. For both of us.
Even though you're still a fur rocket, you get tired a little faster and what you lack in energy, you've made up for in experience and wisdom. I'm still impressed every single day by what you can do with words and commands. How good you are at sensing people's emotions and energies. How you react when someone is sick or sad, and how much love you spread to everyone you care about.
You know our daily routine and know exactly what is going to happen. You read my every move, and sometimes I suspect you can read my thoughts or know my plans almost before I do. For example, you often get up and lie down in the bedroom just before I get up from the couch to go to bed. You love to snuggle up to me in the evening and falling asleep to your heavy breathing is one of the best things I know.

Your birthday is pretty predictable. But you also like everything to be the same as usual. I wrap treats and a certain model of teddy bear in lots of cardboard and paper. I may be in doubt whether you love the paper or the gift more in the split second you get the gift. But when the teddy bear is finally unwrapped, you are incredibly happy and proudly show it off to everyone who cares to see it. Preferably with a purring happy sound.
You've had quite a few of those teddy bears by now. So many that I have a stockpile of new ones hidden in a cardboard box because you often manage to lick and chew it to death before Christmas or your next birthday.
I hope I get to wrap a lot of teddy bears and get to celebrate you for many years to come.
Happy birthday, Marvin!
Greetings Charlotte
