Christmas without the dog friend

Jul uden hundevennen

Christmas is a celebration of the heart – but it is also a celebration of traditions. And not least, Christmas Eve itself is packed with traditions that no one should tamper with. Should we have roast pork or duck? Is cherry sauce the right choice? And do we unwrap the presents at the same time or one at a time? These are questions that can almost tear families apart during the sweet Christmas season.

A question that probably also comes up in some families is: Can the dog come with you on Christmas Eve? Normally, most people feel that if the host/hostess doesn't like you dragging the dog along to a party, then the dog is allowed to stay home in the basket that evening.

But now it's Christmas Eve! Shouldn't I spend Christmas with my best friend? Should the dog really be left alone at home in the basket on Christmas Eve?

And in my opinion – yes, it should.

And don't think I'm the practical type who says a dog is just a dog, and off with it. I'm the personification of crazy dog lady! The bass even has a Christmas stocking, and the highlight of the day is when we have to find out the calendar gift of the day. But I also know that it's mostly for my sake, and for the dog's sake we might as well hang up the Christmas stocking in June.

And in the same way, the dog is completely indifferent and unaware that it is Christmas Eve, it is home alone. After all, it is just one evening and could just as well be March 24 or August 24. The dog just wants to be with us night and day and all seven days of the week if it could choose. But we dog owners have to choose not to do that on its behalf because of work and other things where we cannot take the dog with us.

And if you can't bring the dog with you on Christmas Eve because the hosts say no, let's remember that it's solely for our own sentimental reasons that we want to bring the dog with us - the dog couldn't care less that it's December 24th.

The bass can't come with me on Christmas Eve either, but he'll be hanging out with a neighbor instead - and can be happy not to have to be forced to wear a Santa hat that evening.

I hope Christmas peace descends upon all homes and dog baskets!
