🎄 December 20th: Teach your dog to slalom between the legs! 🐾
Today's advent calendar trick is fun, collaborative and builds the relationship between you and your dog: Slalom between the legs! 🤗✨ Here the dog zigzags through your legs while you walk. It's not only an entertaining trick – it also strengthens cooperation and trust. 🌟
The exercise is also a great warm-up because it activates the dog's large muscle groups and sharpens focus before training or dog sports such as rally, agility or obedience. 🐕💪 It's a perfect combination of physical and mental training!
How to learn slalom – three methods:
1. Shaping (The dog's initiative) 🧠 :
- Stand with the dog by your side. Step forward with opposite legs and wait for the dog to look between his legs.
- Mark and reward when it moves forward. Repeat and gradually increase the demands.
- When the dog can zigzag one step, continue with more.
2. Lure (Use of treats) 🍖 :
- Step forward with opposite legs and lure the dog through your legs with a treat in your hand.
- Reward and repeat until the dog follows several steps.
- Slowly remove the treats from the hands and insert a signal such as "Slalom" or "Zigzag."
3. Target (Using hand target) ✋ :
- Step forward and present your hand as a target, so the dog follows and nibbles on your hand.
- Mark and reward when the dog passes through the legs. Slowly increase the number of steps and give the signal.
- Phase out hand targets by making them less obvious over time.
Bonus tip 🎁 :
If you are into dog sports, physical and mental warm-ups are essential to avoid injuries and improve focus. Slalom is perfect for this purpose! 🏃♂️🐕
Give the slalom trick a try today and enjoy a fun and active workout with your dog. 💖 Have you tried slalom before? Share your experiences, preferably with a video, in the comments section on Facebook! 🎉
