December 21: Impulse control game "Leave it" 🐾🛑
Today's Advent calendar tip is about impulse control - an important theme in dog training, which can make a huge difference both in everyday life and in the training situation! 🎄🐕 The dog learns to think about and control his impulses, even when the temptations are great - such as leaving the neighbor's cat alone, ignoring the pizza on the table or mastering a tempting figure 8 in rally. 🍕🐱
Today's exercise: Leave it! This is a fun but challenging impulse game where the dog learns to ignore selected treats, even though it is allowed to take most of them.
How to do it:
1. Sit down with a handful of treats and throw them to the dog at a fast pace.
2. Give a take it signal for the treats the dog can eat, and a leave it signal for those it should not.
3. When the dog has to leave a treat, it can be difficult, as it is already in the process of catching – suddenly it has to stop and ignore! 🛑✋
If the dog initially tries to take a treat that it should ignore, you can neutrally cover the treat with your hand. When the dog declines and leaves the treat, reward it with lots of praise and treats🥳🤗
Start slowly, and make it harder over time by increasing the pace and throwing the treats from a longer distance. In the long run, leave it can become a reliable signal that you can use in many situations – for example, if your dog needs to leave something exciting when you are out. 🦌
So try the impulse control game "Leave it" today – an exercise that is both challenging and fun!
