Advent Calendar with Dog Life | Door 18 - Teach your dog to find peace

Julekalender med Hundeliv | Låge 18 - Lær din hund at finde ro

December 18: Teach your dog to find peace on the carpet, in the basket or on the bed 🐾🛏️

Teaching your dog to find a break station is a gift for both you and your dog. It can make everyday life calmer and training more effective. A break station gives your dog a clear signal when it's time to relax - and when to pay attention. It can be a great help in the kitchen, where you don't have to trip over a curious snout, or when you're training and your dog has to wait calmly for his turn. 🍲🏋️

Benefits of a break station

🔹 Avoid tripping over your dog while cooking.
🔹 Create calm during training by giving your dog clear signals.
🔹 Make it clear when the dog should relax and when it should be focused.

How to teach your dog to calm down

1️⃣ Start with the volunteer initiative
Sit next to the blanket or basket and look at it. Every time your dog shows interest in the blanket – it could be a step closer or just a glance – reward with a treat. Place the treat on the blanket, not in your hand, to avoid your dog becoming focused on you. 🍪

2️⃣ Let the reward come from the carpet
By letting the rewards come from the blanket, you increase the value of the blanket and lower the energy level. Your dog will understand that the blanket is a calm place where it pays to stay. ✨

3️⃣ Turn on the signal
When the dog starts to voluntarily go to the blanket, you can add a signal, such as "basket" or "blanket", just before it reaches it 🎶

4️⃣ avoid treats in your hands 🦴

If you have treats in your hands, the dog can quickly become very focused on your hands. Therefore, see if you can keep the treats in the pockets, and only take them out and give them to the dog when he has found the blanket himself. There is a DogCoach snack pocket that can be left open, ideal for this, so you can quickly get to the rewards.

By making the blanket a break station, your dog will quickly understand when it is time to relax and when focus is expected. This not only creates calm in everyday life, but also a more harmonious training. 💚
