Welcome to our Advent calendar! 🎄
December offers small, useful training tips that can make life easier for you and your dog.
Look forward to Zara Holst Zachariasen from Hundeliv guiding you through 24 lovely tips and tricks.
Today we start with a practical trick:
Teach your dog to shake on cue. It's fun, useful, and a great help in everyday life! 🐶💦
Why is shaking important?
Shaking is a natural calming signal that dogs use to calm themselves down. It can be after a swim, a stressful situation, or just to change focus. 🌿
When we teach our dog to shake on cue, we can help them find peace – or avoid a wet living room after a rainy walk! 🚿🐕
How to train yourself to shake on cue:
1️⃣ Observe your dog's natural shaking. When your dog shakes, clearly say "shake" at the same time. This helps to connect the action with the word.
2️⃣ Reward. Use a treat, toy, or praise the dog immediately afterward. Repeat this every time the dog shakes naturally. 🦴👏
3️⃣ Create the situation. When the dog starts to understand the word, you can simulate situations where it shakes, for example after a bath or a walk in the rain. Say "shake" and wait for it to perform the action. Reward. 🎶
4️⃣ Repeat and practice. The more times you practice, the stronger the connection between the signal and the action will become. Make sure to practice in different situations so the dog understands what you mean.
Bonus tip: Use in everyday life
When your dog can shake on cue, you can make him shake before he comes inside the house after a walk in the rain. That way you avoid a wet dog and a soaking wet living room! 🏡✨
You can also use the trick to calm your dog if he is stressed. The shaking helps him find calm and gives him a moment to change his focus.
Happy training and happy December! 🎅🐾💚
